Functional Neurology

What is Functional Neurology?

Functional neurology, a subfield of applied clinical neuroscience practiced at the Aura Functional Neurology Center (Aura FNC) office located in Cumming, Georgia right outside the Atlanta area. We utilize our comprehensive understanding of the brain, body, and nervous system to develop targeted, non-invasive treatment plans for various neurological conditions like dysautonomia and migraine.

Unlike traditional neurology, which often focuses on structural damage or lesions in the brain (i.e., stroke, tumors), functional neurology zeroes in on “functional lesions”. Functional lesions refer to regions of the brain that may not be functioning optimally, even though there is no visible structural damage. These areas may be “under-firing” or “over-firing”, leading to a range of neurological symptoms.

The field of functional neurology is focused on identifying these areas within the brain and using specific stimuli, exercises, and modifications to lifestyle and diet to improve brain function. This approach fosters neuroplasticity and supports symptom resolution.

Functional neurology also relates closely to the principles outlined by Sir Charles Sherrington in his 1932 Nobel Prize-winning theory on the “integrated action of the nervous system”. Sherrington was a neurophysiologist who proposed the concept of the “central integrated state”, suggesting that the nervous system functions as an interconnected network, with every part influencing and being influenced by the others.

Sherrington’s Theory

Applying Sherrington’s theory, functional neurology emphasizes the interconnectedness of the nervous system, treating it as a complex, dynamic network rather than a series of isolated components. It recognizes that a functional lesion in one part of the brain can influence, and be influenced by, the functioning of other parts. Therefore, by improving the function of the identified areas, the practices used in functional neurology can also improve the overall integrated functioning of the nervous system.

Functional neurology is a modern, patient-centered field of study that combines principles from Sherrington’s groundbreaking work with a current understanding of neuroplasticity and applied clinical neuroscience. Functional neurology provides a holistic strategy to enhance brain function and overcome neurological conditions.

What is a Functional Neurologist?

Functional Neurologists, or Chiropractic Neurologists, are American Chiropractic Neurology Board-Certified specialists. Functional Neurology involves non-drug, non-surgical care for those with neurologically-based health problems and utilizes concepts of neuroplasticity to make lasting changes within the brain and spinal cord, making up the central nervous system (CNS).

Patients who visit a Functional Neurologist may be looking for neurorehabilitation for various neurological conditions commonly including neurodevelopmental, or learning and behavior disorders (NDDs), headaches, migraine, vertigo, pain syndromes, dysautonomia, POTS, concussion, PCS, nerve injury, spinal cord injury, head injury or traumatic brain injury (mTBI/TBI or stroke), movement disorders, long COVID, cognitive decline, and many other conditions.

With a holistic approach, Functional Neurologists address the root causes of these conditions, emphasizing personalized care plans tailored to each individual’s unique neurophysiological needs. Additionally, they often incorporate cutting-edge technologies and evidence-based therapies to optimize neurological function and enhance overall well-being.

Education and Our Approach

In addition to their clinical expertise, Functional Neurologists actively engage in ongoing research and education to stay at the forefront of advancements in applied clinical neuroscience through the lens of neurological, metabolic, functional, structural, and musculoskeletal perspectives. This commitment to continuous learning ensures that patients receive the most innovative and effective treatment plans available in the field of functional neurology.

Through a detailed assessment of each patient’s neurological function, Functional Neurologists develop targeted interventions that may include specialized exercises, sensory stimulation, neurofeedback, nutrition, and other brain-based modalities. By fostering a collaborative partnership with their patients, Functional Neurologists empower individuals to actively participate in their own healing journey even after their treatment program and are away from the office. This patient-centered approach, combined with a deep understanding of how to aid neuroplasticity, distinguishes Functional Neurology as a dynamic and evolving field dedicated to optimizing neurological health and function, and overall well-being.
